The short version

  • We collect what we need to run DirtRecon: your account, what you ride, your checkpoint photos and the GPS location recorded with each photo.
  • The app uses your location while you have it open and when you take a checkpoint photo. It does not track you in the background or keep a history of where you rode.
  • Checkpoint photos are shared with DirtRecon. A photo goes to a sponsor only if you tap Share with [sponsor]. The Photo-Sharing Terms explain how.
  • We don't sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising.
  • You can ask us to show you, correct or delete your information at any time at hello@dirtrecon.com.

Who we are and what this covers

DirtRecon ("DirtRecon," "we," "us") runs a GPS scavenger hunt for adventure motorcycle, ATV and side-by-side riders. This policy covers our website at dirtrecon.com and the DirtRecon app for iPhone and Android.

The app is still being built and will launch for the 2027 riding season. The app sections of this policy describe how it will handle your information at launch. If anything changes before then, we will update this policy first.

Information we collect

When you visit the website

  • Waitlist sign-ups. The waitlist form opens your own email app with a message to hello@dirtrecon.com. If you send it, we receive your email address and, if you included them, what you ride and your ZIP code. Nothing is stored by the form itself.
  • Emails you send us. Your name, email address and whatever you write.
  • Technical data. Our website host, Cloudflare, processes basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, so it can deliver the site and protect it from abuse. The site loads fonts from Google Fonts and Fontshare, which receive your IP address and browser information when the page loads.
  • No analytics or ad trackers. We don't use analytics, advertising pixels or tracking cookies on the website. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie to block automated attacks.

When you use the app

  • Account information. Your email address, password (stored in encrypted form by our account provider) and the display name you choose. Your display name can be a nickname.
  • Rider profile. What you ride, whether it is plated for the road and whether it is over 50 inches wide, so the app can show roads and checkpoints open to your machine. You can also add a home region.
  • Checkpoint photos. Each photo you take in the app, along with the GPS coordinates, the accuracy of the GPS fix, the time it was taken and the checkpoint it belongs to.
  • Location. With your permission, the app uses your phone's precise location (1) while the app is open, to show where you are on the map, and (2) at the moment you take a checkpoint photo. Your position on the map stays on your phone. Only the location recorded with a checkpoint photo is sent to us. The app does not collect location in the background or record your route.
  • Purchases. If you buy a Rider Pass, the payment is handled by Stripe, Apple or Google. We receive your purchase status, plan and renewal date. We never see your full card number.
  • Rewards shipping. If you earn a physical reward, such as a patch, we ask for your name and mailing address so we can send it.
  • Device and app data. App version, device model, operating system and crash reports, used to fix problems.
  • Support. Messages you send us and our replies.

How we use your information

  • To run the app: create your account, show challenges and checkpoints, and show roads open to your machine.
  • To verify checkpoints, by checking that the GPS location in your photo is inside the checkpoint zone.
  • To track points, badges and season progress, and to ship the rewards you earn.
  • To share checkpoint photos as described in the Photo-Sharing Terms.
  • To give sponsors visit counts for their checkpoints. These are totals only and don't identify you.
  • To deliver photos to sponsors when you choose to share them.
  • To send emails about your account, purchases and rewards. If you joined the waitlist, we will email you about the launch. We may send occasional news about new challenges, and every one of those emails includes an unsubscribe link.
  • To prevent cheating and abuse, for example by spotting check-ins that are impossible to reach in the time between them.
  • To keep the service secure, fix problems, and meet our legal obligations.

How we share information

Checkpoint photos. Sharing checkpoint photos with DirtRecon is part of using the app. Sharing with sponsors is your choice:

  • With DirtRecon. We may feature your photos on our website, in the app, on social media, in emails and in ads, credited to your display name.
  • With sponsors, only if you choose. After you check in at a sponsored checkpoint, the app shows a Share with [sponsor] button. Only if you tap it does that sponsor receive the photo, your display name and the date of your visit. You can also share later from your photo gallery, or stop sharing at any time. Sponsors never receive your email address, contact details, location history or photos from other checkpoints. Your points and rewards are the same whether or not you share.
  • Visit counts. Sponsors see how many riders checked in at their checkpoint. Counts are totals and don't include names or photos you haven't shared.
  • With other riders. Your display name, badges and featured photos may be visible to other DirtRecon riders.

Before a photo is delivered to a sponsor or published, we remove the GPS data embedded in the image file and blur visible license plates. Photos from remote checkpoints are published without exact coordinates. We never show any rider's live location.

Service providers. We use companies that help us run DirtRecon, and they may only use your information to provide services to us. These include Supabase (accounts, database and photo storage), Cloudflare (website hosting and security), Stripe (payments), Apple and Google (app stores and in-app purchases), an email delivery provider, and mail carriers for rewards.

Legal and safety. We may share information if the law requires it, or if we believe it is needed to protect the safety, rights or property of riders, the public or DirtRecon.

Business changes. If DirtRecon is sold or merges with another company, your information may transfer to the new owner, which must keep honoring this policy for information collected under it.

What we don't do. We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising (targeted ads based on your activity across other sites and apps). When you tap Share with [sponsor], you are directing us to send that photo to that sponsor. That is your choice, not a sale. Because we don't sell or share personal information, we don't offer a "Do Not Sell or Share" link, and if that ever changes, we will update this policy and add one first.

How long we keep it

  • Account and profile information: for as long as your account is open.
  • Checkpoint photos and their location data: for as long as your account is open, or until you delete the photo.
  • After you delete your account: we delete your profile and photos from the app and our active systems within 30 days. Copies in backups are overwritten on a regular schedule. We keep purchase records as long as tax and accounting rules require, and we may keep limited records needed to prevent fraud.
  • Photos already featured, or shared with a sponsor, before you delete them may stay in material that was already published or made. The Photo-Sharing Terms explain this.
  • Waitlist emails: until the app launches and we have told you, or sooner if you ask us to remove you.

Your choices and rights

  • Location. You can turn location access on or off at any time in your phone's settings. Without location access you can still browse challenges, but you can't record checkpoints.
  • Sponsor sharing. Share or stop sharing any photo with a sponsor from your photo gallery. When you stop sharing, we stop sending that photo and ask the sponsor to stop making new uses of it.
  • Emails. Use the unsubscribe link in any news email. Account and purchase emails will still be sent while your account is open.
  • See, correct or delete your information. Edit your profile in the app, delete individual photos, or delete your whole account in the app's settings. You can also email hello@dirtrecon.com.
  • State privacy rights. Depending on where you live, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states with privacy laws, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, delete it, opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising, and appeal a decision we make about your request. Email us to make a request. We will verify your identity before acting on it, respond within the time the law requires, and never treat you differently for using these rights.
  • Precise location. Some state laws treat precise location as sensitive information. We only collect it after you give permission on your phone, and only for the features described above.

Age requirement

You must be 18 or older to create a DirtRecon account. The website is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.

Security and storage

We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls and providers with strong security practices. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and tell us right away if you think your account has been misused. Your information is stored and processed in the United States.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If the change is significant, we will also tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
