The short version
- Agreeing to these terms is required to record checkpoints in the DirtRecon app. You can browse without agreeing.
- Every checkpoint photo is shared with DirtRecon.
- Sharing with a sponsor is your choice. A photo goes to a sponsor only if you tap Share with [sponsor], and your points and rewards are the same either way.
- You keep ownership of your photos. You give DirtRecon, and any sponsor you share with, permission to use them in marketing.
- We credit you by display name, blur license plates, remove GPS data from shared files and never share your location history.
- Only take photos you have the right to share, and get permission from anyone else in the shot.
About these terms
These Photo-Sharing Terms explain what happens to the photos you take at DirtRecon checkpoints. They apply when you use the DirtRecon app, and they form part of the DirtRecon Terms of Use, which will be published along with the rider waiver before the app launches for the 2027 season. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle the information that comes with your photos.
Sharing is part of the game
Checkpoint photos are how DirtRecon works. They prove the visit, and they show other riders where the riding is good. Because of that, sharing your checkpoint photos with DirtRecon is a condition of recording checkpoints. You agree when you create your account.
If you don't want your photos shared with DirtRecon, you can still browse challenges, but you won't be able to record checkpoints, earn points or earn rewards.
Sharing with sponsors is different. It is always optional, and it only happens when you choose it.
What is shared, and with whom
- Every checkpoint photo is shared with DirtRecon.
- A photo is shared with a sponsor only if you tap Share. After you check in at a sponsored checkpoint, the app shows a Share with [sponsor] button. It is off until you tap it. You can also share a photo later from your gallery.
- No strings attached. Your points, badges and any sponsor reward are the same whether or not you share.
- What goes with a shared photo: your display name, the checkpoint name and the date of your visit.
- What sponsors never receive: your email address, contact details, location history, photos you didn't share, or photos you took at other checkpoints.
- Visit counts. Sponsors see the total number of riders who checked in, without names.
You keep ownership
Your photos are yours. These terms don't transfer ownership. They give DirtRecon, and any sponsor you choose to share with, permission to use your photos as described below.
Permission you give DirtRecon
By recording a checkpoint, you give DirtRecon a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, copy, store, display, publish and distribute the photo, and to make edits to it. Edits include cropping, resizing, color correction, adding a caption or credit, and blurring license plates or faces. DirtRecon may use the photo to run and promote DirtRecon, including in the app, on our website, on social media, in emails, in ads, in printed materials and in sponsor reports.
DirtRecon may let its service providers handle photos to run the service, and will send photos to sponsors only when you choose to share them. The license is unpaid, and it can transfer to a new owner if DirtRecon is sold or merges with another company.
Permission you give sponsors
When you tap Share with [sponsor], you give that sponsor a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use the photo to promote their own business. That includes their website, social media, newsletters, in-store displays and ads for their business.
Sponsors may not:
- sell, license or pass your photo to anyone else,
- use it to promote a different business, or a product or service that isn't theirs,
- edit it in a misleading way, or use it in a way that suggests you endorse anything beyond visiting them,
- use it in anything illegal, hateful or defamatory.
Sponsors agree to these limits in their DirtRecon sponsor agreement. If a sponsor breaks them, tell us and we will act on it, which can include ending their sponsorship.
Credit and protections
- Credit. When DirtRecon features your photo, we credit your display name where practical, and we ask sponsors to do the same with photos you share. You can choose your display name, and it can be a nickname.
- License plates. We blur visible license plates before a photo is sent to a sponsor or published.
- Location data. We remove the GPS data embedded in the image file before a photo is sent to a sponsor or published. Photos from remote checkpoints are published without exact coordinates.
- Kids. DirtRecon won't feature photos in which a child's face can be seen.
- No live location. DirtRecon never shows where any rider is in real time.
What you promise
When you take a checkpoint photo, you confirm that:
- you took it yourself, at that checkpoint, using the DirtRecon app,
- everyone who can be identified in the photo, such as a passenger or riding partner, agreed to be in it and to have it shared under these terms, and for anyone under 18, a parent or guardian agreed,
- the photo doesn't show illegal riding, riding on closed roads or trails, or riding on private land without permission,
- the photo doesn't contain nudity, hate, harassment, or anything else illegal or offensive.
Removing photos
- Stop sharing with a sponsor. You can stop sharing any photo with a sponsor from your gallery. We stop sending it, and the sponsor must stop making new uses of it. Posts or materials the sponsor already made may stay up.
- Delete a photo. You can delete any of your photos in the app. We remove it from the app and stop making new uses of it. Material already published or made before you deleted it, such as an existing social media post, a printed flyer or a sponsor's existing post, may stay up. Deleting a checkpoint photo also removes the points for that checkpoint.
- Delete your account. Deleting your account works the same way for all of your photos.
- People in your photo. If someone who appears in a photo asks us to take it down, we will remove it and ask any sponsor it was shared with to stop using it.
- Reporting. Anyone can report a photo that breaks these terms by emailing hello@dirtrecon.com. We remove photos that break these terms, and we may suspend or close accounts that repeatedly break them.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will post the new version here with a new effective date, and tell you in the app or by email before a significant change takes effect. We won't expand how photos you have already shared can be used without asking you first.
